Pasolini in Friuli

Pasolini im Friaul

As a teenager, Pasolini sometimes spent days cycling through the hamlets and villages of the Casarsa area, secretly looking for a sexual adventure. But the young men he meets along the way, and with whom he chats briefly when he asks for directions, aren’t interested in him, or at least they don’t show it to him.

His life is so very different from that of the farm boys. He reads a lot, writes poetry and is interested in music and culture. But he is also very sporty, plays excellent football and is an excellent striker, quick and agile. He makes contact with the boys in the area through sport.

In the summer, when they go to the Tagliamento to swim or play football together, the boys sometimes masturbate together when they feel unobserved. This cannot satisfy Pasolini’s desire for physical love. He suffers greatly from it, oscillating between despair and hope for salvation.

At that time he must have realized that he could not meet society’s expectations. He is punished for it with his loneliness. This sense of powerlessness in the face of a system that marks him out as an outsider will later be expressed in all his contempt and hatred of the so-called average citizen.
