The water symbolizes the sum of possibilities, it is fons et origo, the reservoir of all possibilities of existence. An archetype of creation is the island, which suddenly manifests itself in the midst of the floods. Conversely, immersion in water symbolizes reintroduction to the undifferentiated state of pre-existence. Therefore, the symbolism of water includes both death and rebirth. (Mircea Eliade)
